By April, your lawn is likely in full swing. But a mowed lawn only looks as good as its edges. This is the month when we pull out the string trimmers, edgers, and hedge trimmers—the handheld tools that provide that "manicured" look.

Handheld equipment often uses 2-cycle engines, which require a specific oil-and-gas mix. Because these engines are small and high-revving, they are the first to suffer from poor maintenance. At Atlas Mobile Small Engine Repair, we see more "won't start" calls for trimmers in April than any other month. Here is how to keep your detail tools in top shape.

The 2-Cycle Checklist

If your trimmer is stuttering or refuses to stay running, it’s usually one of these three culprits:

  • The Fuel Mix Crisis: Most handheld tools require a 50:1 gas-to-oil ratio. If you used last year's leftover mix, the ethanol has likely absorbed moisture, creating a "goo" that clogs the tiny passages in your carburetor. Always start the season with fresh fuel.

  • The Spark Arrestor Screen: Inside your muffler is a tiny screen designed to prevent sparks. Over time, it can get "carboned up," essentially choking your engine. If your trimmer has no power, this is often the hidden cause.

  • Cracked Fuel Lines: The rubber lines that carry fuel from the tank to the engine are prone to drying out and cracking over the winter. If you see a leak or smell gas, don't ignore it—it’s a fire hazard.

Atlas Pro Recommendation: The Homeowner’s Workhorse

If you’re tired of fighting with a budget-grade trimmer from a big-box store, we recommend stepping up to these two "pro-sumer" legends:

  1. Echo SRM-225: This is arguably the most reliable string trimmer ever built. It features the i-30™ starting system that reduces pull effort by 30%, and the Speed-Feed® head makes reloading string a 30-second job instead of a 10-minute struggle.

  2. Stihl FS 56 RC-E: Stihl is the choice of many professionals for a reason. This model is lightweight, balanced, and remarkably fuel-efficient.

Mobile Service for the Small Stuff

Don’t think your job is "too small" for a house call! Many of our customers in Kansas City, Lee's Summit, and Overland Park have us look at their trimmer, edger, and blower all in one visit.

  • We come to you: No more trying to fit a long-shaft edger into a sedan.

  • Same-day tuning: We can replace fuel lines, clean carburetors, and swap spark plugs right in your driveway.

Ready to give your lawn those crisp, clean edges? Let Atlas make sure your handheld gear is ready to work as hard as you do.
