The $100 Mistake: Why October is the Most Important Month for Your Mower

As the Kansas City leaves turn and the grass finally slows its growth, most homeowners are ready to park the mower and forget about it until spring. But at Atlas Mobile Small Engine Repair, we call this "The $100 Mistake" month.

The single most common reason a mower won't start in April is a failure to properly store it in October. When gas sits for more than 30 days, it begins to chemically break down, leaving a sticky, varnish-like residue that clogs the tiny passages in your carburetor. By the time spring rolls around, that "free" storage has turned into a $100+ repair bill.

Here is how to winterize your gear like a pro.

The Great Fuel Debate: Drain it or Treat it?

There are two ways to save your engine from the "ethanol blues" this winter:

  1. The "Dry" Method: Run your mower until it completely runs out of gas. Then, try to start it a few more times to pull every last drop out of the fuel lines and carburetor bowl. This is the safest way to ensure no gunk forms over the winter.

  2. The "Treated" Method: If you prefer to keep gas in the tank (which can help prevent the fuel tank seals from drying out), you must use a stabilizer. Fill the tank with fresh gas and a high-quality stabilizer, then run the engine for 10 minutes to ensure the treated fuel reaches the carburetor.

The Atlas Winterization Checklist

Beyond the fuel, your machine needs a little TLC before it hits the shed:

  • Scrape the Deck: Wet grass stuck to the underside of your mower all winter will trap moisture against the metal, leading to rust and "deck rot." Grab a putty knife and clear it out now.

  • Remove the Battery: If you have a riding mower or an electric-start push mower, the freezing Midwest temperatures will kill a sitting battery. Remove it and store it in a cool, dry place (like a basement shelf) or hook it up to a battery tender.

  • The "Fogging" Trick: For long-term protection, remove the spark plug a

nd spray a tiny bit of "fogging oil" into the cylinder. Pull the starter cord slowly a few times to coat the internal parts. This prevents internal rust during the humid Missouri winter.

Atlas Pro Recommendation: The Only Fuel to Trust

If you want the absolute best for your machine, find a gas station in the KC metro that sells 91 Octane Ethanol-Free (Pure) Gas. It is more expensive, but it doesn't absorb water like standard E10 gas. Pair that with STA-BIL Storage (the red stuff), and your machine will be much happier in the spring.
